Global energy prices jumped by 25.7% in September, led by a 21.2% rise in crude oil, according to the World Bank's latest "Pink Sheet" commodity price release reported by Birr Metrics on 12 October.
Food prices rose by 3.8% over the same month, the outlet said, citing the same World Bank release.
Birr Metrics published the figures under the headline "Dearer Oil, Cheaper Coffee Threaten Ethiopia's Recovery", and wrote that the terms of trade are rarely kind to poor commodity exporters, and that September was no exception for Ethiopia. Coffee is among Ethiopia's leading export commodities.
Separately, Ethiopian Monitor reported in September that Ethiopia's consumer price index rose 15.1% year on year in August, edging down from 15.3% in July, citing the latest monthly inflation report.
