An estimated 100,000 people fled across the border into Ethiopia after South Sudan's army ordered the evacuation of the opposition-held town of Akobo, according to UNICEF.
The South Sudanese military forced the mass displacement by ordering residents to leave Akobo, which is controlled by opposition forces. UNICEF confirmed the displacement figures on Tuesday, as reported by RFI.
The forced evacuation represents one of the largest single cross-border displacement events in the region in recent months, adding significant pressure to humanitarian operations along the Ethiopia-South Sudan border.
South Sudan has been mired in internal conflict for years, with periodic escalations between government and opposition forces continuing to drive civilian displacement across the region.
