At least 2,011 people have died and 4,381 cases have been confirmed across five provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Congolese officials, in what health authorities describe as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record.
The outbreak, declared on May 15, has hit the DRC's conflict-affected eastern and northeastern regions, where rebel violence, degraded road networks, and strikes by unpaid health workers have combined to slow the response even as the virus accelerates. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said most new cases are still being detected outside the network of monitored contacts — a sign that transmission remains largely uncontained.
The pace of the crisis is the starkest indicator of its severity. It took roughly nine weeks for the outbreak to record its first 1,000 deaths; the toll then doubled to 2,000 in only around three weeks. Congolese health authorities estimate the case fatality rate at 45.9 percent — meaning nearly half of confirmed cases have proven fatal.
This is the DRC's 17th recorded Ebola surge, and by most measures it is already the country's worst. The 2018–2020 Kivu outbreak, previously the DRC's deadliest, killed nearly 2,300 people out of 3,500 recorded cases over a much longer span. The current outbreak is closing that gap in a fraction of the time. Globally, it now trails only the catastrophic 2014–2016 West African epidemic, which killed 11,310 people, as the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded.

Complicating the response further is the strain of virus itself. The outbreak is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists — unlike the more common Zaire strain that devastated West Africa a decade ago and against which the Ervebo vaccine has proven effective. On Friday, WHO vaccine experts recommended a full-scale human trial to determine whether Ervebo offers any cross-protection against the Bundibugyo strain, after early animal-trial data suggested partial efficacy. Two additional Bundibugyo-specific vaccine candidates are in early human trials, while a third is being developed to reach that stage — but results, if they come, are likely months away.

> "In the absence of an effective vaccine, control (for the outbreak) rests on identifying cases and then nursing them in secure facilities until they recover or sadly perish," said Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia in the UK.
Hunter noted that the conflict environment makes even that basic containment strategy difficult to execute. "Identifying cases early enough to prevent spread can be impossible," he said, pointing to interrupted communications and restricted access in a region where armed conflict has displaced populations and disrupted routine disease surveillance for years.
The timeline of the outbreak's true origins remains only partly settled. While the outbreak was officially declared on May 15 in the DRC and neighboring Uganda, the WHO has said the virus was likely circulating as early as February — three months before detection. That lag, if accurate, underscores how difficult early surveillance has become in the affected provinces.
Separately, unconfirmed reports emerged this week of a suspected case outside the continent: Israel's Ministry of Health said Tuesday it was testing a citizen who developed a fever after returning from the DRC. Results were expected within 24 hours, and the individual remained in isolation. The case has not been confirmed as Ebola.
