The African Union Commission has deployed an Election Observation Mission to the Republic of the Congo ahead of the March 15 presidential election, according to Fana Broadcasting.
The mission arrived in Congo-Brazzaville at the invitation of the government to observe and assess the conduct of the electoral process. The AU Election Observation Mission (EOM) is coordinated from the continental body's headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The deployment follows standard AU protocol for member state elections, with the continental organization maintaining a policy of observing major electoral processes across Africa upon government invitation.
The mission comes as President Denis Sassou Nguesso seeks another term after more than four decades in power. Sassou Nguesso has governed Congo-Brazzaville for most of the period since 1979, with a brief interruption in the 1990s. In 2015, he successfully changed the constitution to remove presidential term limits, clearing the path for his continued rule.
The 2021 presidential election drew criticism from opposition groups who disputed the results, reflecting broader patterns of electoral contestation in the oil-rich Central African nation. International observers have historically raised concerns about media access, opposition campaign restrictions, and vote counting transparency in Congo-Brazzaville.

AU election observation missions have faced scrutiny from democracy advocates who argue the continental body rarely declares elections fundamentally flawed, even when significant irregularities are documented. The AU's observation methodology emphasizes continental solidarity and non-interference principles, leading to what critics describe as overly diplomatic assessments.
The timing places the Congo election within a broader electoral calendar across Africa, where several long-serving leaders face voters in 2026. The AU's observation standards and post-election statements are closely watched by civil society groups monitoring democratic governance across the continent.
The mission's findings will be compiled into a preliminary statement shortly after polls close, followed by a comprehensive report submitted to AU leadership in Addis Ababa.
